USGS
INFORMAL BOOK AND MAP SERIES
Water-Resources Investigations Reports (WRI, WRI/OFR, & WRIR—variations
of the same series)
The WRI numbered series was begun during 1973. Prior to 1973, most interpretive water-resources
reports were published as Water-Supply Papers, Circulars, or unnumbered open-file
reports.
Between 1973 and 2004, interpretive
reports not published in one of the formal report series (Water-Supply Papers,
Hydrologic Investigations Atlases, Circulars, or
Professional Papers) are published as Water-Resources Investigations
Reports. Most non-interpretive water-resources reports (mainly reports of hydrologic data) are
published as open-file reports. In 2004 the WRIR series was
discontinued and replaced by a new series called Scientific Investigations
Reports (SIR).
Between 1973 and 1982, the series identifier differed according to the source from which
copies could be obtained. If the report were available from the National
Technical Information Service (NTIS), U.S. Department of Commerce, it is
identified on the cover and title page as a Water Resources Investigation (WRI).
If the report were available only from the local USGS office that produced it, it is identified as a Water-Resources
Investigations/Open-File Report (WRI/OFR). (A limited number of free copies of both types of WRI
reports have been available from USGS
offices in Wyoming.) In general, reports without oversize pages or plates were identified
as WRI, and those with oversize pages or plates as WRI/OFR. Reports in the special series
describing the hydrology of coal areas are identified as WRI/OFR (for example,
WRI/OFR 83-545), regardless of publication date.
Beginning in 1982, reports in this series are identified as Water-Resources Investigations
Reports (WRIR), and the sequence numbers are preceded by a "4" (except the post-1982
coal-area reports).

can view online HTML or PDF versions of most Water-Resources Investigations Reports published since about 1997.
