Ground-water Levels on the Rise

Ground-water levels in a Cheyenne monitoring well located north of Prairie View Golf Course have risen more than 1.5 feet during the last six weeks. According to Kathy Muller Ogle with the U.S. Geological Survey, depth to the ground water was 38.9 feet below land surface on April 12, 1999; by May 23, the level had risen to 37.3 feet. Ogle notes that this is most likely a result of precipitation that the Cheyenne area received during that period. Water-level measurements made during the last 10 months are shown in the figure below.

The monitoring well is 265 feet deep and is screened in the bottom 80 feet of the Ogallala Formation. The well is measured by the U.S Geological Survey as part of a cooperative project with the City of Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities.
